A beloved classic, reimagined for the modern web.
Minesweeper.org — home to the classic Minesweeper game since 2000 — has expanded its puzzle lineup with a brand-new feature: the 15-Puzzle. Available now at minesweeper.org/other/15puzzle, this iconic sliding tile game joins Tentaizu, Mosaic, and Nonosweeper as part of the site's growing daily puzzle collection.
What Is the 15-Puzzle?
The 15-Puzzle is one of the most enduring logic puzzles ever devised. Played on a 4×4 grid of 15 numbered tiles and one empty space, the goal is simple: slide the tiles back into their correct order in as few moves — and as little time — as possible. It's easy to learn, but genuinely challenging to master.
A Daily Challenge for Everyone
Like the site's other puzzles, the 15-Puzzle features a daily mode — one shared puzzle that resets at midnight UTC, giving every player around the world the exact same challenge each day. Scores can be submitted to a dedicated leaderboard, letting you see how your time and move count stack up against other solvers globally.
Play With Your Own Photos
One of the standout new features is the ability to upload a custom image to use as your puzzle. Instead of numbered tiles, your photo is sliced into a grid of fragments — transforming a personal picture into the puzzle itself. This opens up two distinct ways to play:
- Hidden image mode — The tiles show no visual content while you're solving. The full photo is only revealed once the puzzle is complete, making the final reveal a satisfying surprise.
- Photo fragment mode — Each tile displays its actual slice of the image, much like a jigsaw puzzle. Tile numbers are tastefully overlaid on each fragment, keeping the puzzle navigable without distracting from the photo. You can use the visual context of the picture to help guide your solving strategy.
True-to-Life Sliding Mechanics
A key focus of this implementation is physical authenticity. In a real-world sliding tile puzzle, you don't move one tile at a time — you push a whole row or column of tiles in a single fluid motion. The Minesweeper.org version replicates this exactly: players can slide groups of tiles together in one natural gesture, just as you would with a physical puzzle in your hands. This makes the experience feel genuinely tactile and satisfying, rather than the click-one-tile-at-a-time approach common in many digital versions.
Share Your Puzzle With Anyone
Once a custom photo puzzle is generated, it can be shared instantly via a link. The link works in either mode — hidden or photo fragment — so you can choose exactly how you want the recipient to experience it. Send a friend a mystery image to solve, or give them the visual hints of fragment mode; the choice is yours.
